Opera performances highlight legacies of Donizetti and Carlos Gomes

Recent operatic performances highlight both classical masterpieces and the legacy of Brazilian composer Carlos Gomes. At Teatro alla Scala in Milan, a production of Gaetano Donizetti’s ‘L’elisir d’amore’ was directed by Maria Mauti and conducted by Marco Alibrando. The venue maintains a historical connection to Carlos Gomes, who premiered ‘O Guarani’ there in 1870.

In Brazil, recent productions have focused on complex works such as Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Don Carlo’ and the revival of Carlos Gomes’ ‘Salvador Rosa’. The latter, which had been missing for decades, was presented through a co-production involving Teatro Amazonas and the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro. The score for ‘Salvador Rosa’ was reconstructed by the Instituto Música Brasilis.
