Opera productions return to Palermo and Seville
The Teatro Massimo in Palermo has staged a revival of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto,’ directed by John Turturro. This production, restaged by Lisa Capaccioli, features a traditional approach to characterization and appearance. The scenic design utilizes Renaissance-style structures and dark blue lighting to create a simple yet expressive environment for the performers.
In Seville, Gounod’s ‘Roméo et Juliette’ has returned to the stage after a twenty-year absence. This new co-production between the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and the Teatro de la Maestranza is directed by Lucas De Fusco. The production sets the action in 1940s fascist Italy, utilizing a minimalist and dark scenography with contemporary costumes to reflect the dramatic progression of the story.
