Operation Bluebird launches new Twitter platform amid trademark dispute

Operation Bluebird, a startup led by former Twitter trademark counsel Stephen Coates, has launched a new social media platform using the Twitter name, branding, and blue bird logo. The company argues that Elon Musk abandoned the trademark rights to the “Twitter” name and the term “tweet” when he rebranded the platform to X in 2023.

The startup is currently in early testing and distinguishes itself through a different approach to content moderation. It utilizes the VERA AI system (Veracity Engine for Real-time Analysis) to assess posts, provide context, and assign trust scores, allowing users to set their own thresholds for visibility of potentially misleading content. Coates describes the philosophy as “freedom of speech, not freedom of reach.”

The move has triggered significant legal conflict. X Corp. has filed lawsuits alleging trademark and copyright infringement to prevent the new platform from operating under the old identity. However, legal proceedings have seen developments suggesting the brand may have been abandoned; a U.S. District Court judge has indicated that X may have relinquished certain rights to the branding during its transition.
