Operation Gota to vaccinate 20 indigenous villages in the Amazon
The Brazilian Ministry of Health is launching a new phase of Operation Gota to provide vaccinations to 20 indigenous villages across the Legal Amazon. Due to the remote geography, the mission relies entirely on aerial logistics provided by the Brazilian Air Force.
The current phase, running until September 6, focuses on communities within the Amapá and North Pará Special Indigenous Sanitary Districts. Residents will have access to all vaccines listed in the Unified Health System (SUS) National Vaccination Calendar. Additionally, health teams may provide medical assistance and nutritional monitoring based on local needs.
A subsequent phase is scheduled for the Médio Rio Purus region between September 10 and 20. This interministerial strategy, which has been active since 1989, aims to ensure healthcare access in the most isolated regions of the Amazon. In the first half of this year, the operation visited 112 villages, administering 13,000 doses to more than 8,000 indigenous people.
