Operation Hadin Kai clarifies 2016 Amnesty report on Giwa Barracks

Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), the Headquarters Joint Task Force for the North East, has issued a clarification regarding a recirculated Amnesty International report concerning alleged deaths of detainees at Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri.

The military authorities stated that the report in question was originally published in May 2016 and pertains to alleged deaths recorded between January and May of that year. OPHK cautioned the media and the public against presenting these archival findings as current developments, warning that doing so without historical context could create a false impression of the present situation at the facility.

In its statement, OPHK noted that while the report represents Amnesty International’s account of events from that period, it should not be used to characterize the current conditions at the detention center. The task force urged the public and media organizations to exercise due diligence when sharing sensitive security and humanitarian materials to prevent historical allegations from being misinterpreted as recent events.
