Operation LUMEN targets 317 music piracy sites in Latin America
Authorities in five Latin American nations are launching Operation LUMEN to block 317 websites linked to music piracy, stream ripping, and the distribution of malware. Led by Peru’s intellectual property authority, INDECOPI, the coordinated effort involves internet service providers in Peru, Paraguay, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador.
According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the targeted sites averaged 15 million monthly visits over the last year and reached more than 5.4 million unique visitors. Notably, 44 of the identified sites were directly tied to malicious activities, affecting an estimated 4.7 million users.
Participating national agencies include Paraguay’s DINAPI, Brazil’s CyberGaeco and ANCINE, the Dominican Republic’s ONDA, and Ecuador’s SENADI. IFPI CEO Victoria Oakley stated that the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation in disrupting illegal services and directing users toward licensed, paid subscription models.
