Operation Zenda accused of extrajudicial killings in Benue
Residents of Benue State have accused the elite police unit known as ‘Operation Zenda’ of involvement in extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, and violent raids. Established in 2008 to combat kidnapping and communal clashes, the unit is now described by locals as a source of fear rather than security.
In the village of Tse Angaador, an incident occurred on July 27, 2024, during a traditional funeral rite for a deceased schoolgirl. Witnesses reported that police officers opened fire on mourners, resulting in the deaths of several individuals, including Aondoakura, a 34-year-old father of three. Survivors described a chaotic scene of gunshots and forced entries into homes, highlighting growing concerns regarding impunity and a lack of oversight within the unit.
