Ophthalmologists urge regular eye exams to prevent vision loss
In observance of World Sight Day, ophthalmology experts are emphasizing the necessity of regular eye examinations, even in the absence of visible symptoms.
Prof. Dr. Pembegül Bozgül from Kayseri City Hospital highlighted that regular check-ups are vital for early detection, particularly for children after 6 months and 1 year of age. She noted that genetic factors significantly increase the risk of conditions such as glaucoma, retina diseases, and certain types of cataracts. Glaucoma, often referred to as eye pressure, is noted to be more frequent in individuals over 40 with a family history of the disease.
Prof. Dr. Hande Çeliker from Biruni University warned against dismissing sudden visual changes. While floaters (black spots or web-like shapes) can be natural age-related changes in the vitreous fluid, a sudden increase in their number, accompanied by light flashes or a feeling of a shadow/curtain over the vision, may indicate a retinal tear. If left untreated, these conditions can progress to retinal detachment, leading to permanent vision loss.
