Sicily implements healthcare reforms and technical training initiatives

Sicily is implementing several initiatives to strengthen its healthcare system and professional training. A new protocol signed by Sicindustria and the local health authorities (ASP) of Caltanissetta, Messina, Palermo, and Ragusa aims to bring preventive services, such as oncological screenings and vaccinations, directly into workplaces.

To address technical skill shortages, the ITS Academy Nuove Tecnologie della Vita Alessandro Volta is launching biomedical and biotech training programs in Palermo. Sicindustria president Luigi Rizzolo has called on the regional government to update regulatory frameworks to allow highly specialized technical graduates from these academies to be integrated into the official staff of local health authorities.

On the staffing front, Health Assessor Marcello Caruso announced a plan to hire approximately 2,700 permanent employees to support community homes and hospitals, utilizing 140 million euros in structural funding. Meanwhile, community-level health efforts continue, including recent public prevention events in Catanzaro led by the Order of Nursing Professions (OPI), which provided free health screenings and first aid demonstrations.

In the sector of home care, the association SAMO ETS has raised concerns regarding the future of domiciliary services, urging policymakers to prioritize care quality and professional experience over economic competition in the procurement of palliative and home-based services.
