Madrid protests erupt following fatal high-speed train collision
Massive protests broke out in Madrid following a high-speed train collision near Urda that killed at least 68 people and injured dozens more. Demonstrators gathered outside the Ministry of Transport, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Transport Minister Óscar Puente.
The accident occurred when a Renfe high-speed train collided with a stationary Iryo train. Investigations are examining reports that the Renfe train was instructed to continue at normal speed despite safety system issues. Authorities noted that the instruction may have violated standard procedures, and the control center failed to ensure the track ahead was clear.
Protests, which included participation from right-wing groups such as Falange, turned violent as police used tear gas to disperse crowds after demonstrators began throwing objects. The collision resulted in three carriages derailing and falling down a slope.
