Opodo Study Shows German Solo Travelers Prioritize Freedom and Safety in 2026
A new Opodo study of 9,000 respondents across seven countries, including 1,000 German participants, finds solo travel has become a mainstream choice for all age groups. In Germany, the primary driver is the desire for unrestricted mobility (37% of respondents), closely matching the global average (38%). Safety-related items have risen to become the most important travel consideration for German solo travelers (38%).
Self‑finding motivates 25% of all German solo travellers, but 41% of Generation Z cite it as the main reason. The intention to meet new people while traveling has declined, falling to 19% in 2026 from 28% in 2019. Generational differences are evident: 46% of Millennials prioritize freedom, compared with only 26% of Baby Boomers. Germany ranks third worldwide for concern about travel safety, behind the United Kingdom and France.
