Opossum development and communication patterns

Opossums, the only marsupials in North America, possess a unique reproductive strategy characterized by a short gestation period of 12 to 14 days. Newborns, known as joeys, are born in an extremely underdeveloped state, appearing as tiny, pinkish-grey, bean-sized creatures. At birth, they are blind, deaf, and hairless, with their only well-developed features being their forelimbs and sharp claws, which they use to crawl to the mother’s pouch.

While they do not produce tears, juvenile opossums use various vocalizations to communicate distress. These sounds, which can range from soft chirps to loud hisses, serve as essential survival tools to alert the mother when the joeys are hungry, cold, or separated from her.
