Opportunity Party sets five non-negotiable policy demands
The Opportunity Party has announced five non-negotiable policy demands that must be met for the party to support a future government following the November general election. Leader Qiulae Wong stated these minimum commitments are intended to ensure long-term change.
The five bottom lines include:
• Competition: Granting the Commerce Commission greater independence and power to address market power in sectors such as supermarkets. • Political Reform: Regulating lobbying and implementing caps on political donations. • Health: Creating a 10-year health plan involving professionals with specific commitments to funding, workforce, and infrastructure. • Fishing: Initiating a phase-out of bottom trawling to improve ocean health. • Climate: Recommitting to Paris Agreement obligations and protecting the independence of the Climate Change Commission.
While Wong indicated the party could negotiate with either National or Labour, National leader Christopher Luxon has already ruled out a governing arrangement with Opportunity. Recent polling places the party at 6%, which would grant them approximately seven seats if they maintain this level of support.
