Opposition Leaders Slam Government Spending and Reform in Peru, Chile

Peruvian opposition figure Jorge Nieto, president of the Partido del Buen Gobierno, said the Congress payroll and bonus system had become “unsustainable” after the budget for personnel rose from S/402 million in 2021 to S/906 million in 2025. He called for a comprehensive review of the congressional budget, announced that party lawmakers in Lima and Callao would renounce their installation bonuses, and urged the ruling coalition to relinquish key congressional leadership posts.

In Chile, Communist Party leader Lautaro Carmona condemned the government’s “mega‑reform” tax cuts, claiming they favour large capital and would cut fiscal revenue, shifting the burden onto workers and middle‑income groups. Carmona said the opposition is preparing a legal challenge before the Constitutional Court and warned that the reform could have negative consequences for public finances and social policy.
