Opposition parties in Guyana and Jamaica demand government transparency

In Guyana, the opposition party A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has called for greater transparency regarding the government’s 2026 economic growth projections. Following a mid-year report from the Finance Ministry, APNU parliamentary leader Dr. Terrence Campbell noted significant downward revisions in non-oil sectors. While overall GDP growth forecasts were increased, projections for agriculture, forestry, fishing, sugar, and manufacturing were all reduced.

APNU expressed concern that the economy is becoming increasingly concentrated in the oil sector, which accounted for 78.9% of real GDP in the first half of 2026. The party argued that strong oil-led growth should not obscure the weakening performance of other vital economic activities.

In Jamaica, the People’s National Party (PNP) is demanding the full disclosure of a memorandum of understanding regarding Third Country Nationals (TCN). The opposition claims the government has failed to provide details on the number of foreign nationals expected, their housing, duration of stay, funding sources, or criminal record verification processes.

Opposition Spokesman on National Security Fitz Jackson criticized the government for proceeding with the agreement without parliamentary debate, calling the lack of transparency an erosion of democratic traditions.
