Optical imaging reveals metabolic activity of individual immune cells

Researchers at the Morgridge Institute for Research and the University of Wisconsin–Madison have developed an advanced optical imaging technique capable of revealing the metabolic activity of individual immune cells. This method allows scientists to observe peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) within a complex blood sample without the need for destructive chemical probes or fluorescent labels that can alter cell behavior.

This breakthrough has significant clinical implications for studying diseases such as blood cancers, sepsis, lupus, and cognitive decline. Because PBMCs are already a standard part of clinical workflows, this non-destructive approach could provide deeper insights into disease progression and treatment responses. Furthermore, the technology may enhance the development and monitoring of CAR T-cell therapies, which rely on modifying a patient's own immune cells to fight cancer.
