Optical sector emphasizes sustainable innovation and childhood vision care

In observance of World Vision Day and Vision Week, the optical sector is highlighting both technological innovation and the importance of early eye care.

Grupo Prats has introduced PRATS BIO, a new range of plant-based 1.6 index lenses. This product line aims to meet increasing consumer demand for sustainability by using biomass-certified materials that reduce dependence on petroleum-based raw materials. The lenses are designed to lower CO2 emissions while maintaining high optical performance, including being lightweight and resistant.

Simultaneously, the General Council of Opticians-Optometrists (CGCOO) is emphasizing the necessity of childhood eye examinations. In Spain, the Plan VEO initiative, supported by the Ministry of Health, provides subsidies for glasses and contact lenses to minors under 16. Data indicates that 77% of beneficiaries access these aids through the country's network of approximately 10,000 optical health establishments. The CGCOO reports that refractive issues are common among children, with astigmatism appearing in 75% of cases and myopia in 53.3% of examined files.
