Optiemus expands manufacturing and R&D capabilities in India

Optiemus Infracom is expanding its smartphone screen-protector manufacturing capacity by 20 million units to align with new Indian government regulations. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has mandated Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for screen protectors, effective April 1, 2027. This policy aims to regulate a market currently dominated by approximately 98 per cent unorganized grey-market imports, primarily from China.

Optiemus, which recently launched the RhinoTech brand using Corning glass, currently operates an annual capacity of 24 million units and aims to scale to 100 million units. The Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) suggests that formalizing this sector could create a $2.4 billion export opportunity.

In a separate strategic move, CMF by Nothing and Optiemus Electronics have announced an expanded partnership focused on smartphone research, development, and manufacturing in India. The agreement moves beyond contract production to include product engineering and design. Optiemus is also set to participate in CMF’s upcoming Series A funding round, aiming to establish end-to-end smartphone capabilities within the country.
