Optimism Foundation forecasts 343 million new OP tokens by 2027

The Optimism Foundation released its Year 5 budget outlook covering May 2026 – April 2027, projecting that roughly 343 million OP tokens will be added to circulation. This would raise the circulating supply to about 2.5 billion tokens, representing 58.3 % of the total 4.29 billion‑token supply. The majority of the new tokens – 200 million – are expected to come from the Ecosystem Fund, with 47.6 million allocated to early seed contributors and 15.3 million to investors. The foundation emphasized that the releases follow the original allocation plan and no additional token allocation was requested.

In Year 4 (May 2025 – April 2026), the Foundation allocated about 150 million OP, a one‑third decline from the previous year’s 229.9 million. Governance Fund releases fell 53 % to 13.4 million OP, Retro Funding releases dropped 30 % to 14.2 million OP, and no user airdrops were made. The update also noted a discrepancy of roughly 125 million OP between the budget’s circulating‑supply figure and the public supply tracker, which the Foundation has not explained.
