Optometry Australia launches new framework, cites NZ model

At the Optometry Clinical Conference 2026 in Brisbane, therapeutic optometrist Richard Johnson highlighted New Zealand’s decade‑long experience expanding the scope of optometric practice, including prescribing oral medication since 2014 and performing laser procedures from 2023. He emphasized that the expansion aimed to improve access and integrate care rather than replace ophthalmologists, stressing patient safety and collaboration among professionals.

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the Optometry Board of Australia have released an advance copy of a revised Supervised Practice Framework. The framework introduces clearer supervision levels, virtual supervision, inter‑professional support, a focus on wellbeing, and stricter safety standards. A new Supervised Practice Hub will provide resources for supervisors and supervisees, with rollout expected in mid‑August 2026.
