Opus Dei documentary series premieres on HBO Max

The HBO Max documentary series ‘El buen espíritu: Detrás de la puerta del Opus Dei’ has premiered, serving as a follow-up to the previous production ‘El minuto heroico’. While the earlier series focused on the testimonies of thirteen women, this new three-episode series features fourteen men from eleven different countries across Europe, Latin America, and the United States.

Produced by The Mediapro Studio and presented by journalist Mònica Terribas, the series documents allegations of spiritual, psychological, and economic abuse within the religious institution. The participants describe dynamics of control and exploitation, including instances where individuals were sent to foreign countries as adolescents or pressured to prioritize the organization's expansion over their professional careers.

The production incorporates expert analysis from specialists in canon law, sociology, and research to provide structural context to the personal testimonies. Terribas reported contacting approximately sixty-five former members during the investigative process, though many declined to participate due to fears of retaliation or ongoing family and financial ties to the organization.
