Opus Dei prepares for 2028 centenary of its foundation

Opus Dei is preparing to celebrate the centenary of its foundation in 2028. Founded on October 2, 1928, by Spanish priest Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, the institution has grown from a small group of students and professionals to include approximately 2,000 priests.

Historical records highlight the significance of Galicia in the organization's international expansion. In 1945, Escrivá made his first journey outside of Spain from Tui to Portugal. His connection to the region dates back to 1938, when he traveled to Santiago de Compostela as a pilgrim.

Escrivá's spiritual teachings, notably expressed in his book ‘Camino’, have been translated into over fifty languages. The current Prelate of Opus Dei, Fernando Ocáriz, has called for a period of humble examination and hopeful preparation as the institution approaches its hundred-year milestone.
