Oracle initiates new layoffs amid massive AI infrastructure investment

Oracle is conducting a new round of layoffs across the United States and India, following a significant workforce reduction of approximately 21,000 employees (13%) during the fiscal year ending May 31, 2026. Some employees reported that their access to workplace systems, such as Slack, was revoked before they received official notification of their termination.

These job cuts coincide with a massive strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence. Oracle has significantly increased its capital expenditure to fund AI infrastructure and data center expansion, with spending rising from $8.5 billion in the previous year to $28.5 billion in the most recent quarter. The company has maintained a high capital expenditure forecast for fiscal 2027, ranging between $90 billion and $95 billion.

Oracle CFO Hilary Maxson has framed these workforce changes as a matter of strategic prioritization and process simplification rather than simple cost-cutting. The company's restructuring costs for fiscal 2026 are projected to reach approximately $2.8 billion as it reallocates resources to meet growing demand for AI and cloud services.
