Oracle opens Project Jupiter data center site to media in New Mexico

Oracle has granted media members their first tour of Project Jupiter, a massive 700-acre data center campus currently under construction in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. Developed by STACK Infrastructure, the project is expected to provide significant regional investment and employment, with approximately 4,400 construction workers currently on-site.

Key technical features of the facility include the planned installation of 7,000 fuel cells designed to generate electricity without combustion to lower emissions. To address environmental concerns, Oracle stated it will utilize a closed-loop cooling system intended to recycle water and use non-potable sources, which the company claims will minimize the impact compared to evaporative systems.

The project faces ongoing scrutiny regarding water rights and transparency. Reports indicate that water for the site is tied to a local sod farm owned by Lane Gaddy. While Oracle officials emphasized the use of a closed-loop system, questions remain regarding the specific volume of water to be redirected from local wells. Additionally, Oracle is reviewing its use of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) involving government officials and strategy.
