Oracle secures 1.7 GW of wind energy for Texas AI data centers

Oracle has secured a series of agreements to procure over 1.7 GW of wind energy in Texas to power its expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure. The projects involve ten different installations intended to supply the ERCOT power grid, which supports major Oracle data center campuses such as the one in Abilene.

Key partners in these agreements include RWE, ENGIE, Clearway Energy, and Scout Clean Energy. Specifically, RWE signed a virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) for 433 MW from the Panther Creek I, II, and III wind farms, while ENGIE North America announced a portfolio of agreements covering up to 568 MW.

These investments align with Oracle’s strategic goal to match 100% of its AI data center energy consumption with carbon-free sources by 2035. The move highlights a growing industry trend where securing stable, long-term energy supplies is as critical to AI expansion as hardware and accelerators. This follows a massive surge in capital expenditure; Oracle’s investment spending rose to $28.50 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, up from $8.50 billion in the previous year's corresponding quarter.
