Oracle to purchase nuclear power for Wisconsin data centers
Oracle has announced an agreement to purchase electricity from the Point Beach Nuclear Plant in Wisconsin to power its data center campus in Port Washington. The project, known as Project Lighthouse, is being co-developed with OpenAI.
Under the proposed arrangement, Oracle would subscribe to between 10% and 20% of the plant’s electricity generation, equivalent to 125–250 megawatts. If approved by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, the deal is expected to shift approximately $300 million in fuel costs from We Energies customers to Oracle over the next several years.
We Energies has faced financial pressure due to a long-term power purchase agreement for the Point Beach plant that remains in place even though the utility sold the facility to NextEra Energy in 2007. The rising costs of this contract have been a primary driver for proposed electricity rate increases for more than 1 million customers. By absorbing a portion of these fuel costs, Oracle’s purchase aims to ease the burden on residential ratepayers.
