Oracle VA contract expands to $27 billion through 2031

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has expanded its contract with Oracle Health by nearly $17 billion. This modification increases the total potential value of the electronic health record (EHR) system agreement to approximately $27 billion, with a performance period extending through May 2031.

The expansion follows the 2022 acquisition of Cerner by Oracle. While the rollout has faced historical challenges including technical glitches and cost overruns, the VA reports that 11 hospitals have implemented the system this year, including recent deployments in Indiana. Currently, over 29,000 clinicians are using the system to serve more than 515,000 veterans.

Parallel to this massive government contract, Oracle is undergoing internal restructuring. Despite the influx of public sector revenue, the company has continued workforce reductions, cutting 21,000 jobs in the previous fiscal year due to infrastructure shifts. The company is reportedly pivoting resources toward data centers, cloud capacity, and AI infrastructure, moving personnel from administrative roles to technical operations.
