Oradea and Baia Mare implement urban identity projects

Local administrations in Oradea and Baia Mare are addressing urban identity and historical memory through different approaches to public space.

In Oradea, following a participatory budgeting request, the city has implemented multilingual street signage in the historic center. The new signs include designations in Romanian, Hungarian, and English. This follows a proposal to include old historical names on street plates, a move that officials noted could be sensitive due to the various political figures who have historically held street names in the region.

In Baia Mare, local authorities are working to restore a significant piece of public art known as the ‘Solar Arch’ or ‘the gallows’ in the Buclă area. Mayor Doru Dăncuș is consulting residents on the placement of the work and has announced a program to repair and maintain monumental art pieces to preserve the city's artistic identity, involving the original creator, artist Ioan Marchiș.
