Oradea delays street lighting activation to conserve energy

The Oradea City Hall has extended a measure to delay the activation of public street lighting by one hour. Since August 4, lights have been turned on at 22:00 instead of 21:00 to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours when Romania often imports energy at high costs.

Mayor Florin Birta indicated the measure will likely remain in effect until the start of the new school year on September 7. The decision is driven by national energy concerns, including low Danube water levels due to drought affecting power generation.

The policy has faced significant criticism from local residents and council members. Citizens have reported safety concerns regarding visibility for pedestrians and drivers, particularly at crosswalks, and have noted increased risks in certain neighborhoods. Some local officials have argued that the energy savings are minimal and suggested reducing lighting during late-night hours instead.
