Oral health importance and the impact of stress
Maintaining oral health is essential for preventing various health issues and ensuring functionality in eating and speaking. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), oral diseases are among the most common global health burdens, though many are preventable through basic hygiene practices.
Effective prevention includes brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste using soft bristles, daily flossing to remove plaque between teeth, tongue cleaning to prevent bad breath, and annual professional dental checkups. The FDI World Dental Federation emphasizes that regular professional prevention is key to preserving natural teeth.
Furthermore, emotional factors such as stress can significantly impact oral health. Stress can lead to bruxism, an involuntary clenching or grinding of teeth, particularly during sleep. Symptoms of bruxism include jaw pain upon waking, headaches, tooth sensitivity, visible wear, and fractured dental restorations. Chronic stress may also contribute to gum inflammation, dry mouth, and increased risks of cavities and periodontal disease. Untreated bruxism can lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues, causing pain or difficulty chewing.
