Oral health linked to diabetes and hypertension risks

Research indicates a strong bidirectional relationship between oral health and systemic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. A two-year study published in the Journal of Translational Medicine found that treating tooth infections can lead to lower cholesterol within six months and reduced blood glucose levels after two years.

Medical experts, including dental surgeon Dr. Emmanuel Baah Abekah, warn that oral infections and gum disease cause inflammation that can enter the bloodstream. This inflammation may contribute to insulin resistance, making blood sugar harder to regulate, and can affect blood vessels, contributing to high blood pressure. Conversely, uncontrolled diabetes can worsen gum inflammation and impair the body's ability to fight oral infections.
