Oral health linked to improved self-esteem and reduced dementia risk

Oral health significantly impacts both psychological well-being and physical systemic health. Dental experts note that a healthy smile can bolster self-esteem, improve social interactions, and enhance professional confidence. Dr. Annya Vela highlights that dental insecurity often leads individuals to avoid social participation, whereas restoring oral health can lead to greater confidence in communication.

Beyond aesthetics, research suggests a strong link between oral hygiene and cognitive health. Epidemiologist Tim Spector, a professor at King’s College London, states that optimal teeth cleaning—including daily use of dental floss or interdental brushes—could potentially reduce dementia risk by approximately 20% to 40%.

Scientific evidence indicates that chronic inflammation caused by periodontitis can contribute to neuroinflammation. An imbalance in the oral microbiome, known as dysbiosis, can trigger systemic inflammatory responses and oxidative stress, affecting the immune system in a manner similar to poor dietary habits.
