Oral health linked to systemic diseases and lifestyle factors
Oral health is closely linked to systemic conditions and lifestyle habits. Medical professionals note that diseases such as diabetes and celiac disease can significantly impact dental integrity.
For individuals with diabetes, high blood sugar levels can lead to decreased saliva production, affecting the mouth's ability to neutralize acids and remineralize enamel. Studies indicate that over 40 percent of diabetics suffer from dry mouth, which increases the risk of gum disease. Similarly, research involving thousands of patients suggests that approximately half of people with celiac disease experience enamel defects.
Dental calculus, or tartar, is a common issue resulting from the mineralization of dental plaque. If left untreated, it can lead to serious conditions such as periodontitis and tooth loss. Factors that accelerate its formation include poor oral hygiene, smoking, dry mouth, and the use of orthodontic braces or dental prosthetics.
