Oral health risks associated with nicotine pouches and vaping
Nicotine pouches and vaping products present various risks to oral health, despite being marketed as alternatives to traditional cigarettes. Nicotine pouches, which contain nicotine, flavorings, and pH balancers without tobacco leaves, are typically worn for 15 to 60 minutes. However, placing them in the same spot daily can cause gum recession, exposed roots, and increased sensitivity.
Nicotine also constricts blood vessels in the gums, which can slow healing and increase the risk of inflammation, infection, and gum disease. Users may also experience oral ulcers, white patches, or bad breath due to changes in oral bacteria. Vaping is frequently linked to dry mouth, which can impact the mouth's ability to neutralize acids produced by bacteria.
