Oral hygiene and its connection to cardiovascular health
Research suggests a link between oral health, specifically gum disease, and an increased risk of cardiovascular issues such as heart attack, stroke, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure. The American Heart Association has updated scientific evidence regarding this connection, noting that periodontal disease may contribute to systemic inflammation or allow oral bacteria to enter the bloodstream.
While a direct cause-and-effect relationship has not been confirmed, dental plaque accumulation can lead to gum inflammation. Frequent gum bleeding during brushing or flossing is a primary indicator of gingivitis, often caused by plaque buildup, aggressive brushing, or hormonal changes. Health authorities recommend daily flossing and proper brushing techniques to mitigate these risks.
