Oral hygiene: Choosing between electric and manual toothbrushes

While electric toothbrushes are often recommended for their ability to reduce plaque more effectively than manual ones, dental professionals emphasize that they are not a universal requirement for every patient. Effective oral hygiene depends on individual needs, manual dexterity, gum health, and consistent usage habits.

According to the 2024 consensus from the FDI World Dental Federation, both manual and powered toothbrushes can be effective, provided they are used correctly. Similarly, the American Dental Association notes that electric models may offer specific advantages for children, individuals with disabilities, or patients with orthodontic appliances due to ease of use.

When selecting sonic toothbrushes, key technical factors include vibration frequency, available cleaning modes, pressure sensors, timers, and battery life. Features such as pressure sensors help prevent excessive force, while various modes allow users to customize cleaning for sensitive gums or whitening needs.
