Orang Asli higher education enrollment exceeds 600 students
More than 600 Orang Asli youths are currently pursuing studies at universities and colleges across Malaysia, marking a significant increase in the community's participation in higher education. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, stated that this achievement reflects the government's use of education as a tool for social mobility.
When the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA) was placed under his ministry four years ago, an initial target was set for 200 Orang Asli students to enter higher education. This target was exceeded in the first year with over 300 students, and rose to 401 in the second year. The current figure of over 600 demonstrates the community's potential when provided with adequate support.
Furthermore, efforts to empower the community are being expanded into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). This includes the use of specialized institutions such as the Paya Bungor Training Centre in Maran, Pahang, which currently hosts 135 Orang Asli students.
