Orange County approaches mayoral election and charter changes
Orange County is approaching significant political shifts through upcoming elections and proposed governance changes. Voters will soon elect a new Orange County mayor, a position that has been held by three individuals for a combined 26 years. The Orlando Economic Partnership (OEP) has emphasized that the next leader must prioritize economic diversification, job creation incentives, and infrastructure improvements, such as the expansion of SunRail and addressing traffic congestion, to remain competitive with surrounding counties.
Simultaneously, voters in the city of Orange will decide on Measure K, a proposed city charter change. If adopted, the new charter would grant the city greater control over municipal affairs, including contracting, procurement, and elections. Notably, the measure would reset the term-limit clock for the mayor and City Council, as previous service would not count toward new lifetime limits. Under the proposal, councilmembers would be limited to three four-year terms, while the mayor would be limited to two.
