Orange fire crew faces challenges from fatal winter house fires

The Orange fire crew in the Central West region has experienced three consecutive winters marked by fatal house fires. Acting Superintendent and Regional Zone Commander Dane Philippe noted that while summer is often perceived as the busiest season, the cooler months represent the most critical period for the station due to the frequency of house fires.

Philippe highlighted the emotional toll these tragedies take on the crew, who operate in a tight-knit environment to manage the aftermath of emergencies. He also addressed the logistical challenges faced by regional stations, including fewer crew members and greater distances to backup services from areas like Blayney, Molong, and Bathurst.

To support these efforts, the Orange Fire Station has received a new $1.3 million state-of-the-art fire truck. The vehicle features innovative equipment storage, in-cabin seating for firefighters to don breathing apparatus, and battery-operated cutting tools.
