Orangutan Day observances held at zoos in Germany and Austria

In observance of International Orangutan Day, zoological institutions in Germany and Austria are hosting events to highlight the conservation needs of these great apes.

Zoo Rostock is organizing an action day focused on species protection, the rainforest, and sustainable consumption. In collaboration with the association ‘Orang-Utans in Not e. V.’, the zoo will provide information on how habitat destruction, particularly for palm oil plantations on Borneo and Sumatra, threatens the species. The event includes presentations on reforestation, medical care for orphaned orangutans, and the impact of climate change.

At Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Austria, the focus is on showcasing the natural behaviors of Borneo orangutans. The zoo has expanded its climbing facilities using robinia trunks to allow the animals to better express their arboreal lifestyle. Officials noted that these animals serve as ambassadors for their endangered wild counterparts, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stable breeding groups in captivity to support conservation awareness.
