Orangutans rescued from forest fires and snares in Central Kalimantan

A mother orangutan named Gadis and her 10-month-old infant, Garis, have been rescued from a forest fire in Kandan Village, Central Kalimantan. During the rescue operation conducted in the early hours of Friday, October 23, rescuers discovered that Gadis's wrists were tightly bound by snares, likely intended for wild boar hunting. The primates were found amidst heavy smoke from ongoing forest and land fires.

The evacuation was a collaborative effort involving the BKSDA (Natural Resources Conservation Agency) Wildlife Rescue Unit and the Orangutan Foundation. Following the rescue, Gadis required immediate medical attention for wounds caused by the snares. The location of the animals was initially reported by an environmental activist after previous observation attempts in early October had been unsuccessful.
