Orbán János Dénes scandal: 1.3 billion recovered

The cultural nonprofit Kárpát‑medencei Tehetséggondozó Nonprofit Kft. (KMTG), founded and led by writer Orbán János Dénes, paid more than 400 million for the usage rights of his works that are also performed by the Budapest Operett Theatre. The theatre itself paid an additional 129 million for translations and librettos, bringing the total public spending on Dénes’s oeuvre to over 412 million forfeit.

Minister Tarr Zoltán announced that the government has reclaimed 1.3 billion that would have been disbursed for new operett productions, translations and foreign performances. The ministry said it contacted the state‑owned entity involved and secured the full amount, while further investigations are ongoing.

Orbán János Dénes issued a statement claiming the payments were lawful and that the cultural ministry oversaw the contracts. The Operett Theatre’s ensemble issued a collective statement demanding clarification of the payments and their impact on the theatre’s finances. Several writers and cultural officials, including L. Simon László of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, called the sums “ethically shocking” and urged Dénes to resign from his academy membership.
