Orca named Jack performs massive breaches near Victoria
A Bigg’s killer whale known as Jack (T137A) was filmed performing spectacular breaches in the waters south of Victoria, near the Strait of Juan de Fuca. On August 20, the 24-year-old male, estimated to weigh 12,000 pounds and measure 25 feet in length, repeatedly launched himself entirely out of the water.
Alex McIntire of the Orca Behaviour Institute noted that the whale’s vertical reach was as high as his own body length, a rare feat for an adult male of his size. The display, which included several consecutive jumps, was witnessed by boaters who described the impact of the whale hitting the water as sounding like cannon fire.
Jack is a member of the T137 family and is recognized by his five-foot-tall dorsal fin. He is known for his acrobatic behavior in his typical hunting grounds in Puget Sound.
