Orcas hunt harbour seals near Patricia Bay, British Columbia

A resident of Sooke, British Columbia, witnessed a pod of orcas hunting harbour seals near the Institute of Ocean Sciences in Patricia Bay on August 31. Kevin Morgan observed approximately eight orcas working as a team to drive the seals off a floating log breakwater and into the water to facilitate the hunt.

Morgan estimated that up to eight seals were killed during the event, with one instance of the hunt captured on video. Erin Gless, executive director for the Pacific Whale Watch Association, noted that such hunts are frequent along the British Columbia coast, though they are rarely captured on camera by bystanders.
