Orcas identified as predators of great white sharks

Scientists have identified a pattern of attacks where orcas target and consume the livers of great white sharks. The discovery began in South Africa near Gansbaai, where multiple great white sharks were found dead with identical mutilation marks, including torn bodies and missing livers.

Biologist Alison Towner of Rhodes University led the necropsies on these sharks. The investigation pointed toward two male orcas, nicknamed Port and Starboard, who were first observed near Cape Town in 2015. These predatory tactics, which involve extracting the nutrient-rich liver, have since been observed in oceans worldwide, signaling a significant shift in marine predator dynamics.
