Orchestra Baobab releases new album Made in Senegal

The legendary Senegalese group Orchestra Baobab has released its first new album in nearly a decade, titled ‘Made in Senegal’. The ensemble, which originated in the Medina of Dakar in the late 1960s, maintains a signature sound that blends afro-cuban styles, international pop, jazz, Congolese rumba, and traditional Wolof griot music.

After facing potential dissolution due to shifting musical trends, the group experienced a career resurgence in 1989 following a reissue of their work by Nick Gold on the World Circuit label. This revival led to international tours and acclaimed performances in cities such as London, Paris, New York, and Johannesburg.

While many founding members have passed away, the nine-member orchestra has transitioned to a new generation of musicians. This includes the recent addition of Korka Dieng, the first woman to join the group, ensuring the continuation of the band's cultural legacy and its influence on Senegalese and African music.
