Orchid care techniques for watering and fertilization

Maintaining healthy orchids, particularly Phalaenopsis varieties, requires careful moisture management to prevent root rot. Because these epiphytic plants naturally grow on tree branches with exposed roots, they require well-draining substrate and consistent airflow.

One method to control watering is using ice cubes. Placing approximately four ice cubes directly on the bark substrate allows the water to melt slowly, providing gradual moisture without saturating the roots or the pot base. It is essential to avoid contact between ice and the leaves or stems, and the pot must have drainage holes to prevent water accumulation.

Additionally, a homemade fertilizer can be prepared using bay leaves, uncooked rice, and boiling water. The recipe involves steeping three bay leaves and a handful of rice in one liter of boiling water for several hours, blending the mixture, and then diluting it with another liter of cold water. This solution, intended for use every two weeks, aims to provide trace minerals like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to support root health and blooming. However, such mixtures should supplement, rather than replace, proper light, drainage, and standard fertilization.
