Orchid care tips for blooming and maintenance

Proper care for orchids involves specific techniques for pruning, watering, and environmental adjustments to encourage blooming. To stimulate new growth after flowers have fallen, experts suggest cutting the flower stem above the second node.

Watering should be guided by the color of the roots; silvery or light-colored roots indicate a need for water, while dark roots suggest sufficient moisture. It is vital to prevent water from pooling in the pot or sitting in the leaf base to avoid root rot. Using transparent pots can help monitor root health.

Seasonal changes require different approaches. In autumn and winter, watering frequency should decrease as the growing medium dries more slowly. Nutrient requirements also drop during darker months, so fertilization should be reduced. Temperature shifts can trigger blooming for certain species; for example, some orchids benefit from warmer days (19–22°C) and cooler nights (14–15°C).
