Orchid care tips for healthy growth and blooming
Maintaining healthy orchids requires specific care regarding repotting, light, and moisture. To encourage blooming, especially during winter, it is recommended to use transparent pots with side holes. This allows for monitoring root health: silver roots indicate thirst, green roots indicate sufficient water, and brown, soft roots suggest overwatering.
When repotting, it is essential to remove decayed roots using alcohol-cleaned scissors and apply ground cinnamon to the cuts to prevent fungal growth. Using fresh pine bark is critical, as old substrate can break down into a paste that suffocates the roots. Additionally, avoid placing orchids directly above radiators, as the dry, warm air can dry out flower buds before they open.
Blooming cycles vary by species. While Phalaenopsis orchids can bloom year-round, many hybrids typically flower between late winter and spring. A lack of flowers does not necessarily mean a plant is unhealthy; orchids often require periods between blooms to focus on developing roots and leaves.
