Orchid care tips for managing roots and blooming periods

Proper care for Phalaenopsis orchids involves managing environmental factors such as root exposure and temperature stability. Roots that grow outside of the pot are often a natural occurrence rather than a sign of disease. In their natural habitat, these orchids grow on trees, meaning their roots require access to air, light, and moisture. Healthy aerial roots typically appear firm and grayish or silvery, turning green when hydrated. Pruning should only be performed on dead, brown, or mushy roots to avoid unnecessary plant stress.

To extend the blooming period, it is essential to place orchids in a bright location that is protected from direct sunlight, radiators, and sudden temperature fluctuations. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends maintaining temperatures around 17°C at night and 20–25°C during the day. Avoiding drafts from windows or air conditioners is also critical, as rapid environmental changes can cause flower buds to drop prematurely.
